Work with color
Naturally, most artists love the color. This is an integral part of the creative person. Color attracts us; emotions are expressed through it.
Usually, a person can name the most and least favorite colors. It is important to ask yourself: why do I like this particular color? For example, you chose blue. Why exactly blue? Do you just like the way it looks? Or do you get caught up in the feeling that the blue color evokes? Understand the reason for your choice and realize what meaning color will bring to your work.
Analyze your style
Are you following your daily routine or prefer inconsistency? Are you a workaholic or procrastinator? Are you enjoying the opportunity to bring change or prefer stability?
Understanding your personality traits will help you choose the style of work that is most comfortable for your work. For example, if you want to procrastinate – do it. If you like sticking to a schedule – you are welcome!
Find the source of emotions
This is a pretty obvious way to develop a personal style. Look at work, understand what you like about it, learn to draw in the same way. But what if you like diametrically different styles? It’s easier to wonder which styles don’t make you feel at all. This way, you can exclude those styles that you will never use.
When looking at the picture, there comes a moment when it forces you to change the nature of observation. At what point did you stop just enjoying it and start analyzing? “How did the author do this? What kind of brush did he use? Can I repeat that?” By noticing these questions behind you, you can be sure that the painting style has captivated the artist within you.
Follow the next step and begin to disassemble the paintings and techniques that interest you. The color of the sky in another author’s works, the uneven fragments of a vase in the picture, the contrast in the color of the water – try to do the same. You will soon have a clear idea of your favorite styles.
Draw what you are interested in
The best way to find your style is to focus on an interesting topic. Draw what you like, which seems interesting. Do you like nature? Draw nature! Do you like cats and butterflies? Draw them! Do you like great stories, or do you have something to tell about? Create characters and draw a comic book! Are you interested in technology, and do you have the latest quadcopter model at home? Draw it. Are you following fashion trends? Create your own.
You can link drawings to real life. As soon as your worldview has formed and become different from others, the things you create will also be different. And that’s what makes your style really unique!
Combine daily life and art
Ideally, your work should be a reflection of your life. If you are a fan of long walks, then landscape can be your genre. If your heart is gardening, draw flowers. This is an obvious way to choose a subject for work and a step towards learning how to create from everyday life events.
What are your hobbies? What life experiences could you capture in pictures? The answers to these questions already influence your style, but this influence can be expanded.
Imagine that a person likes silence. Society is good, but often they need to be alone. Choosing between a noisy, crowded party and a modest cozy dinner, such people will choose the latter. Therefore, muted colors and soft outlines will prevail in their works.
The process must be pleasant
Draw for yourself. You can’t draw just out of a desire to sell a painting or win an award. You need to paint because you want to.
Think about which part of the creative process is your favorite. Do you like unpredictability and improvisation at work? Or, say, accuracy and discipline? When do you completely immerse yourself in work and lose track of time? Some love experimenting and creating a mystery effect, while the others stick to general rules.
If the creative process does not bring pleasure, there are two ways out: change the angle of observation or change the activity.
All in all, draw how you feel. Create constantly. Show who you really are. Naturalness in creativity will come only when you yourself want it.
